Safety starts here: practical training for timber and hardware businesses

Lifting, carrying and moving heavy or awkward products is part of everyday life in timber and hardware – making manual handling one area where the right training can make a real difference.

This National Safe Work Month, the National Timber & Hardware Association (NTHA) is giving members the opportunity to sharpen their skills with its practical MOVE SMART: Safe Manual Handling Workshop through its Registered Training Organisation (RTO 5343).

Held online via Teams on Wednesday, 28 October from 1pm to 3pm AEST, the two-hour, non-accredited workshop is designed for both new and experienced workers.

The course covers:

  • Identifying manual handling risks and hazards
  • Preventing workplace injuries
  • Safe work procedures and risk assessments
  • Safer techniques for lifting and handling awkward or heavy products

It is practical training that workers can take straight back to the workplace and put into action.

This year’s National Safe Work Month theme, ‘Safe work is for life’, is a timely reminder that good safety practices are about protecting workers’ health, safety and wellbeing now and into the future.

In 2024, 188 workers were fatally injured at work in Australia, while 146,700 serious workers’ compensation claims were recorded in 2023–24.

The MOVE SMART workshop costs $250 per person, with NTHA members able to use their training vouchers.
