Joshua Curtis: Finding His Way and Building a Future at ITI

Sometimes, the biggest achievements begin with someone simply being given a chance.

For Joshua Curtis, that chance has led to an incredible journey — from an uncertain start to being named NTHA Trainee/Apprentice of the Year at the recent 2026 NSW/ACT Timber & Hardware Industry Awards.

And the recognition doesn’t stop there. Joshua is also a finalist in the NSW Apprenticeship Employment Network (AEN) Awards, being held on October 9.

A different beginning

When Joshua first joined ITI Australia as an apprentice, he didn’t have a clear career plan. He had fallen in with the wrong crowd and, just one week into his employment, found himself attending court.

Rather than turning away, ITI and NTHA chose to stand beside him.

With structure, patience, consistency and genuine support, Joshua began to find his feet. He built friendships at ITI, developed a strong sense of belonging and started to understand the responsibility that came with having people rely on him.

Finding his place at ITI

Joshua’s transformation has been remarkable.

He completed his Certificate III in Supply Chain Operations through the previous cadet program and chose to continue with ITI. Today, he plays an important role in production, operating machinery and developing his understanding of how the different parts of production and logistics come together.

At a young age, Joshua has already taken on significant responsibility, including independently running ITI’s Hardware section and preparing to operate the Hundegger machine.

His attendance has improved, his response to feedback has strengthened, and, most importantly, he takes pride in his work.

Recognised for his achievements

That growth was recognised at the recent NTHA Timber & Hardware Industry Awards, where Joshua was named NTHA Trainee/Apprentice of the Year.

In his acceptance speech, Joshua thanked the ITI team for its ongoing encouragement and gave a special mention to his fellow colleague and former apprentice, Marcus Hallam, for “showing him the ropes.”

It was a fitting acknowledgement of the people who have helped Joshua along the way and the importance of having positive role models around you.

Looking ahead

For mentor Tiarnna McNamara, Joshua’s journey has been one of growth for everyone involved.

“It’s been a learning curve for us, too, understanding different personalities, providing the right structure and boundaries, and making sure we follow through on the promises we make to our cadets.”

Now, Joshua has another milestone ahead, with his AEN Awards finalist recognition to be celebrated on October 9.

From an uncertain beginning to industry recognition, Joshua’s story demonstrates what can happen when a young person is given opportunity, support and the chance to find their place.

Congratulations, Joshua. We couldn’t be prouder of how far you’ve come — and we’re excited to see what’s next.

A special thank you to Tiarnna McNamara for mentoring Joshua throughout his program, and to all the ITI supervisors, colleagues and the NTHA Trainees & Apprentices team who have supported his journey.
